Story Block Design

Designing the Story Block

Many of the cast iron acanthus leaves decorating the front pilasters were broken or partially missing. We created a mold with the best one we had and used casting resin to fill the missing parts.

We fabricated the stairs for safety. In winter, the snow falls right through it preventing ice from forming on the steps.

Only one finial was left on the cornice. We created a cardboard model and gave the pieces to be cut by a local artisan.

Kitchen Layout

“When designing a kitchen layout, there are a few key considerations I keep in mind. First, I create work triangles between the main work zones – the refrigerator, sink, and stove. This allows for efficient movement and workflow. Second, I ensure adequate countertop space and storage cabinets, incorporating the organizing needs. I recommend at least 18 inches of countertops on either side of the stove and 2-3 feet around all other appliances. Third, I plan for good lighting throughout, using a combination of general overhead lighting plus task lighting. Fourth, I allow for at least 42 inches between opposite cabinets and appliances. And finally, factor in creative uses of space like islands and pantry cabinets”

Textures and Colors

“I always try to design a warm, welcoming kitchen space and I have a predilection for a combination of stainless steel appliances paired with painted cabinets, quartz countertops, and wood floors. The stainless steel appliances provide a modern, sleek look that is easy to coordinate with any cabinetry or palette. Choosing painted cabinets in soft, muted tones like grays, blues, or greens rather than wood cabinets can create a more relaxed, casual aesthetic. Quartz countertops add durability, with countless options for colors and patterns that can align with the cabinets. Finally, wood floors ground the space with natural texture and help connect the kitchen to adjacent living areas. Together, these materials and finishes allow me to play with varied textures from the smooth quartz to the grainy wood floors, while layering in colors that provide a comfortable, inviting feel suited to my tenants’ homes and lifestyles.”
