On Colors and Light

Selecting the right color for the right space is a process that may take months! A color only exists with light and its appearance changes depending on other colors surround it. Because of the color and intensity of the light entering a room, a color needs to be experienced throughout the day and the different seasons.

Even if you remove the complexity of the light source and the cast of other objects on a wall, a color is perceived in the context of its surrounding. The hue, saturation, and value may look different depending on its surrounding. You will find on the next column some ‘color illusion’ pictures to prove this phenomenon.

In this image above, if you slide to the left, you will see that the value of A and B are the same. However, they appear very different because of their placement and in the context of the shadows surrounding them.
If you drag to the left, you will see that all the dots have the same pinkish hue. However, they appear to have different values near other colors.
The eyes have the same grey color. The yellow cast makes the left eye appear yellow. Your eyes think the entire face on the left has a purple cast and corrects the grey to look like the complementary color (yellow)
The Central square looks darker on the left before it is contrasted with a lighter background. Both central squared have the same hue, value, and intensity.
